== Early life and education ==
Madoff was born in Akron, Ohio. He attended Firestone High School. He graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin with degrees in philosophy and psychology. In 1971, he started and ran a men's and women's fashion company, Billy Whiskers. In 1972, Madoff was chosen as one of the top 10 designers in the United States.〔https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/23503685/〕 He then moved to New York and started another fashion company, Benje. He sold the company in 1977.
